A Natural Approach to First Aid – Wound Care

injured knee

Our philosophy at 3Girls Holistic is to take a natural approach to health and healing.  Gifts from nature abound, and we can find cures for most of what ails us in herbs, homeopathic medicines, cell salts, and food.  Herbal medicines have been around since the beginning of time.  They are tried and true remedies that can be counted on the vast majority of the time without side effects, or the troubling consequence of creating resistant bacteria, as is the case with ALL pharmaceutical antibiotics.  The situation regarding antibiotic resistance is so dire in fact that the World Health Organization has said that “A post-antibiotic era – in which common infections and minor injuries can kill – far from being an apocalyptic fantasy, is instead a very real possibility for the 21st Century.”

While so much could be written on this topic, we’re going to start off slow, and try to tackle one small step at a time.  This post will focus on wounds – minor cuts and scrapes of the everyday variety that don’t need medical attention.  Growing up, whenever we needed a healing ointment, my mom would reach for her handy tube of Neosporin.  I’m sure it’s what most people did, and still do.  It’s the go-to product to help with the healing of minor cuts and scrapes.  They’ve done an excellent job of gaining market share, much the same way Kleeex has with tissues.  Unfortunately, Neosporin is contributing to the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria due to the antibiotics that it contains.  Fortunately, there are effective, natural and safe alternatives readily available!  One of which is our own 3Girls Holistic Wound Salve.

Most herbal salves will have a similar base of ingredients, including beeswax and a carrier oil such as olive.  The beeswax is used to solidify the preparation, and the oils, while having numerous benefits on their own, are typically infused with certain herbs chosen for their demonstrated effects.

Our own formula contains:  Beeswax, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Coco Butter, Shea Butter, Calendula and Marshmallow.  All ingredients are certified organic!

The plant profiles for the herbs in our formula are as follows:

calendulaCalendula – With anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, it helps reduce the possibility of infection, as well as preventing or decreasing the formation of pus.  It promotes the growth of epithelial tissue and supports the healing of irritated, injured or diseased tissue while decreasing scarring.  Calendula is used to aid in the healing of wounds, burns, bruises, boils and rashes

MarshmallowMarshmallow -It’s mucilaginous properties help to protect damaged and irritated skin, allowing for more rapid healing.  It’s salicylic acid (the natural forerunner of synthetic aspirin) content, make it effective at reducing pain.  It is anti-inflammorty and helpful for many skin conditions that result from inflammation, including dermatitis and eczema.  Marshmallow is great for chapped skin, burns, boils, and skin ulcerations.

coconut oilCoconut Oil – Treasured for its protective emollient properties, coconut oil has been used for centuries to support and hydrate the skin.  It also has antimicrobial properties and works as a strong disinfectant owing to its Capric /Caprylic/Lauric acid content.  As a result, when applied on the skin, coconut oil protects from microbial infections that can get into open wounds.

olive oilOlive Oil – Rich in antioxidants, including Vitamin A and E, on it’s own it works as a cleanser, moisturizer, and protector of skin.  It also does a splendid job at extracting the properties from herbs when steeped for 4-6 weeks.

cocoa butterCocoa Butter – A thick, solid oil, cocoa butter is one of the richest oils available.  It is an excellent emollient and because it is high in fatty acids, it penetrate deep-down into the skin and hydrate from within. Cocoa butter can also be helpful for many skin problems like eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and skin irritation.

shea butterShea Butter – Sometimes regarded as “superfood for the skin”, it is anti-inflammatory and supportive of the regenerative process of the skin tissue, helping to also sooth and calm irritated skin.  Shea butter contains five essential fatty acids, (a major amount coming from stearic and oleic acids), phytosterols, vitamins E and D, allantoin (good for healing skin irritations), and vitamin A. Given its high content in anti-inflammatory and healing components, Shea butter is called for in the case of eczema, psoriasis, rashes, hives, insect bites, cracked/chapped skin, burns, minor cuts.

Taking one small step at a time to live a cleaner, more natural life might seem too inconsequential to be making a difference.  However, with each step taken the road traveled is extended.  The more people who take these tiny steps, the better chance we have of helping to relieve the burden we’re placing on our planet and ourselves.  Know that whatever you can do is enough!
