Chaste Tree BerryRevered throughout history for its ability to bring hormones back into balance regardless of which way they tip, Chaste Tree Berry continues to be the herb of choice for women experiencing any number of menstrual irregularities. Alone or in combination with other herbs, Chase Tree or Vitex, is not only extremely effective, but also well tolerated.

Improvements are often seen within the first 30 days of use, but plan for 3 months to see full benefits. Long-term use is common and is seen as supportive to the body rather than having any direct action.

Side effects are not common, but can include gastrointestinal complaints, acne, headache and bleeding between periods. All of these tend to be mild and reversible upon discontinuation of the herb. In some women with a history of depression, an exacerbation of depressive symptoms has been experienced. However, this has been seen only rarely and is also reversible upon discontinuation of the herb.

Tincture Form is the most popular among members of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, as well as the American Herbalists Guild. However, powdered herb preparations are also used. Because of its bitter taste, it is not commonly used in tea form.

Typical Dosage:

  • Tincture: 3-5 mL 1-2 time/day (1 daily dose first thing in the morning is common recommendation)
  • Powdered in capsule form: 30-40 mg/day up to 500-1000 mg/day
